Sock Drives

Three of the Moms at Shir Ami Synagog in Newtown, PA who helped organize a sock drive to provide new socks for the homeless for The Joy of Sox

Conducting sock drives is a fun activity and a great way to both raise awareness of the plight of the homeless and the problems they have from not having new socks.

Sock drives can be held in your school, church, workplace, favorite store…or anyplace.

We have found that various classes, grades or departments can get into some friendly competition during the course of a sock drive.  For example, one dorm at a college or university may feel “energized” to collect more new socks than another dorm. Or the 6th graders feel that there is no way the 4th graders will collect more socks.

You get the idea.  And everybody wins.

How to find a shelter in your area

If you are conducting a sock drive and want to donate the socks locally here are two website we’ve found that can help you find shelters in your area.

The first one is ShelterListings.org,  the second is HomelessShelterDirectory.org.     When you click on the links you will leave our website and be taken to theirs.  We feel that the directories are legitimate, but since we do not maintain them we cannot vouch for their accuracy.

If you encounter any problems please contact us.
